Insurance commissioners are either elected or appointed.  There are 11 jurisdictions that elect an insurance commissioner:  CA, DE, GA, KS, LA, MS, MT, NC, ND, OK and WY.  The remaining 40 jurisdictions have a commissioner who is appointed.

Let’s take a look at the insurance commissioner changes that will take place and which ones were results of the November 2nd elections.   There will be changes in at least 23 states.

  • 3 Insurance commissioners resigned; CT, NE & VA.  The governors in these states will be appointing new insurance commissioners.
  • 3 New insurance commissioners were elected.  There were four insurance commissioner elections (CA, GA, KS & OK).  Kansas was the only state to re-elect its insurance commissioner.
  • 17 Newly elected governors will likely appoint new insurance commissioners in AL, CO, IA, HI, MI, MS, NV, NM, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, VT & WI.
  • 6 Governor’s races were too close to call in CT, FL, IL, ME, MN & OR.

How will these changes impact insurance licensing?  How will these changes impact the work the NAIC has been doing?
