Election Day

Insurance commissioners are either elected or appointed.  There are 11 jurisdictions that elect an insurance commissioner.  The remaining jurisdictions have a commissioner who is appointed.

Let’s take a look at today’s elections.

  • There are 37 states with gubernatorial elections.
  • There are 24 governor races with open seats (AL, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, KS, ME, MI, MS, NV, NM, NY, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, VT, WI, and WY) because incumbents are either not eligible for re-election or they chose not to run for re-election,
  • A special election will be held in UT.
  • There are 7 states with governors seeking re-election (AK, IL, IA, MD, MA, NH, and OH).
  • What happens if Commissioner Susan Voss is replaced by a newly elected governor in Iowa (she is scheduled to be the next NAIC president)?
  • Between new governors and newly elected insurance commissioners, it is possible there will be as many as 17 new insurance commissioners after today’s elections.

How will today’s elections impact the insurance departments?  What impact will the elections have on the NAIC and the work they are doing?
